The Good, The Bad and The Downright Ugly of Internet
By Gauher Chaudhry
If getting rich on the Internet was as easy as the many
self-proclaimed experts claim it is, than almost everyone trying
to make a living on the Internet would be rich.
Reading the classified ads in the many marketing ezines and on
many web sites, you would think that everyone was making money
on the Internet except you!
I have been marketing on the Internet for the last five years so
I know how hard it is to make serious cash successfully on the
Internet.
What is the Good?
The good is the fact that the Internet has given anybody the
ability to make a decent living online selling products or
services. People are not limited the same way as mail order
publishers were before the advent of the Internet.
Most of the tools on the Internet (i.e. email) are free so the
cost of doing business is very low. Compare that to buying a
franchise for a fast-food restaurant and all the other start-up
costs involved.
What is the Bad?
The bad part about trying to make a living on the Internet is
that it takes a long time unless you are real lucky. You will
see a lot of long-time experts claiming that you can make a
decent living in a short amount of time, but the fact of the
matter is that it takes the *average* person a long time to
start making a serious income on the Internet.
Many people start an online business with big dreams but the sad
reality is that it takes a lot of time, dedication and
motivation to make it work.
What is the Downright Ugly?
You ready for the ugly? Did you know that 95% of people are
losing money trying to establish an online presence?
So if you are in the 5% percent who are barely scratching out a
living on the Internet, consider your self lucky.
With these type of odds, does it even make sense to start a
business on the Internet?
Here is a quick list of tips that I have learned over the years
to making it work.
-
Don't quit your day job until you start making a lot more
than your salary. Remember, when you start a business on the
Internet, you day job will still be your bread and butter. Your
day job still pays the bills and is the money is a constant
inflow of capital for your new online business.
-
Don't give up. Making a decent living on the Internet takes
a good couple of years. Don't think the money will start
rolling through the door in a few weeks.
-
Don't go cheap. You are not going to make a million dollar
fortune using a Hotmail email address or a Geocities web site.
Buy a domain name and build a reputable online presence.
-
Diversify your products and services. Back-end selling and
repeat business are the key to online success. Develop many
products or services that target your niche and keep selling
them to your existing client base.
-
Deliver what you promise. Don't rip off or disappoint
people. In fact, if you can over deliver to your customers, you
will be well on your way to building a steady income on the
Internet.
Use these tips as a foundation and with a lot of patience, you
can join the elite percent of people who make a decent living on
the Internet.
